Housed at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) BioPark, the biomedical research complex on its downtown graduate school campus at 801 W. Baltimore St. (Building Two), the Baltimore City Community College Life Sciences Institute is uniquely positioned to meet the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workforce development needs of Maryland’s growing bioscience industry, prepare students for high demand careers in the biomedical field, and to help Maryland become a global leader in STEM-based economic growth and job creation. BCCC’s Life Sciences Institute at UMB BioPark is one of the nation’s most innovative partnership between a university graduate school system and a community college. Through this joint collaboration, both institutions strive to meet the growing workforce needs of Maryland’s bioscience industry by:
  • Enabling BCCC biotechnology and environmental science students to pursue their associate degrees and certificates on the UMB campus;
  • Offering training for bioscience jobs to residents in neighborhoods surrounding the BioPark, and
  • Enabling students of the Vivien T. Thomas Medical Arts Academy, a local Baltimore high school, to complete a 4+2+2 educational and career pathway starting with four years of high school, two years at BCCC Life Sciences Institute (leading to the associate degree), and transfer to a four-year institution for completion of the junior and senior years (leading to the bachelor of science degree).

BCCC students and Vivien Thomas graduates who transfer to UMB may specialize in either medical technology or biotechnology research, through the university’s Department of Medical Research Technology, which offers a bachelor of science degree to qualified students entering at the onset of their junior year of college.

The Life Sciences Institute is a key component in fulfilling BCCC’s role as Maryland’s foremost provider of Workforce Pipeline Solutions. The Institute offers industry-specific training to advance students into promising science-based careers in the areas of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, nursing, public health and biomedical research. This prospect will be realized, foremost, by internships and jobs BCCC LIfe Sciences Institute students may acquire with various biotechnology companies whose business operations will be located at the BioPark.
