{How Do I ?}
How do I get to the Libraries? The Liberty Campus library is at 2901 Liberty Heights Av, Baltimore MD, 21215. Hours during the Fall and Spring semesters are as follows. Sunday hours start the third week of classes. The libraries are closed any day the College is. See the Academic Calendar for details. Summer/academic break hours will be posted on the doors to the libraries. See the announcements on the main library page for news of closings.
The libraries usually keep Summer hours. The Circulation Desk, where materials are checked out, closes 15 minutes before the rest of the library. BCCC is a community college and the libraries are open to the community. Materials may be borrowed, however, only by students, faculty, and staff of BCCC. All BCCC students receive an identification card. This card serves as your library card and must be validated before you use our services. Please stop at the Circulation desk if you are a first semester student, transfer student or if you have recently replaced your ID card for any reason. Most books, except for those in the reference or parts of the reserve collection can be borrowed, as well as music CD's and some videocassettes. Magazines and journals, as well as videocassettes for telecourses (courses with televised lectures), may not be borrowed As a member of the BCCC community, you should have an ID card. This card serves as your library card. Present it when you bring things to be checked out at the circulation desk. Remember to return things by the last date stamped on them, or you will be subject to a fine. For how long may I borrow things?
What if I'm off-campus and need an ID card? Off-campus and distance learning students can still get their ID cards at the Public Safety/Security Office in the basement of the Main Building on the Liberty Campus. If you need an ID number for remote access to databases contact the library by telephone at (410) 462-8400, or drop us an e-mail with your name, social security number, and address. You are responsible for everything checked out to your library card. Please do not lend your card to someone else unless you are willing to pay any library fines they might get. If your card is lost or stolen, you need to replace it through the Public Safety/Security Office. You should also notify someone at the Circulation desk right away so we are sure only you have access to your library records. How much are the fines for overdue materials? For ordinary materials, .25/day. 3 or 7 day reserve, .50/day. overnight, $10.00/day. Only ordinary items, marked "stacks" in the catalog. Reserve items cannot be renewed. How do I find out what books are in the libraries? Use the catalog. Do you have the textbook for my class? Check the catalog. Remember, if we do have the textbook, we may have an earlier edition, or the book could be on reserve. Choose "Reserve Desk" on the Public Access Choices Menu
Use the indexes. These are indexes subscribed to by BCCC. They list many articles in journals and magazines, over half of which are full-text, in other words, in which the text appears as it was originally printed. What if all I can find is a citation or abstract? In that case, take the citation to the Periodicals Desk. There, we will show you the original article, if we have it, or arrange to get it through interlibrary loan. What if BCCC doesn't have the journal I want? We may be able to arrange to get it from another library. Ask at the Periodicals Desk about an interlibrary loan. Interlibrary loan is a scheme whereby people who use different libraries can arrange to get books and journal articles from other libraries. Here at BCCC, we have interlibrary loan agreements with most of the libraries in Maryland. The process can take time, depending on what materials are being asked for, and how far they're coming from. You will need to contact the library to arrange an interlibrary loan. Questions about the library, the materials therein, and how to use them should be asked at the Reference Desk, either in person, by calling (410)462-8240 (Liberty) or (410)986-5403 (Harbor), or by e-mail. Can I request that the libraries add a book to the collection? You can. Circulation Desk: The large desk just inside the front doors of the library. It is where books are checked out, where audio-visual materials are signed in and out, and where fines, if necessary, are assessed. The Circulation desk is often very busy, so have your student ID card ready when you go there. Periodicals Desk: The area of the Liberty Campus library where transactions in magazines and journals are carried out. Magazines and journals, collectively known as periodicals, may be read and/or copied from in the library only. Also, interlibrary loans are handled at the Periodicals Desk. At the Harbor Campus these activities are carried out at the Reference Desk. Reference Desk: The place in the library to come with any questions about using the materials in the library, or if you need to find information of any kind. There should always be a reference librarian on duty; if you don't see us at the desk, we're probably helping someone else, and will be back soon. Reserve: Materials that, at the request of Faculty, or because of a noticed interest, have restrictions to how long they may be checked out. Many reserve items are for use in the library only, some may be held overnight, and some are available for 3 or 7 days. |
