Position:  Financial Aid Specialist (2 positions)

 

General Description:

Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Financial Aid, this position assists in the planning, organization, and coordination of financial aid functions of the college; assists and advises in the formulation, revision, and implementation of office procedures; acts as lead for other personnel assigned to the financial aid office and performs related work as assigned. Supports the development of ad-hoc reports and perform duties of a sensitive and confidential nature.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • A minimum of two years experience working in a post-secondary educational financial aid office. Years of experience may be substituted for education requirements.
  • Experience working in a customer focused oriented Financial Aid Office.
  • Knowledge of federal financial aid regulations.
  • Proficiency in the use of the U.S. Department of Education's software systems such as Common Origination and Disbursement (COD), FAA Access and the National Student Loan Database (NSLDS).
  • Experience with financial aid management systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Federal Financial Aid Application, verification, and awarding processes.
  • Proficiency in the use of software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and/or word processing required.
  • Knowledge of MS Office Suite, the Internet and student data systems required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a fast paced, multi-cultural environment.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent customer relations skills and ability to work some evenings and weekends.
     

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a caseload of student files.
  • Assess individual student's financial needs and ascertain the student's eligibility to participate in federal, state, and/or institutional aid programs.
  • Serve as secondary support for COD functions.
  • Provide counseling to students on the manner of integrating their financial concerns relative to personal and/or academic problems.
  • Analyze financial information submitted by students and assists students and parents in the preparation of pertinent forms.
  • Conducts financial aid workshops/conferences and completes all internal and external reports.
  • Evaluates the academic status of all applicants.
  • Stay abreast of current federal regulations and guidelines pertaining to the student financial aid program.
  • Verify student files selected by the U.S. Department of Education.
  • Make electronic corrections to the Department of Education.
  • Correct C-code rejections made by the Department of Education.
  • Process students' private loan applications, consortium agreements, social security waivers, and AmeriCorps waivers.
  • Evaluate Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal Forms and Special Circumstances Appeal Forms.
  • Manage the flow of documents received by the data entry into the computer, batch and scan the documents, and notify the specialists when the documents have been imaged.
  • Supervise work study students.
  • Use various software applications; such as spreadsheets, relational databases, and word processing to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.
  • Apply a working knowledge of applicable laws and regulations.
  • Verify documents for completeness and compliance.
  • Operate fax machine, copier, and other office equipment.
