{Placement Tests}

Note: To take the Accuplacer test online, you must come to the Test Center.

Baltimore City Community College has a mandatory college-approved Placement Test Policy for those students who wish to pursue a degree or certificate program. This policy requires that the Placement test be taken by everyone except the following:
  • Persons who are not seeking an Associate degree or a certificate and have not accumulated 15 or more credits;
  • Persons who transferred credits in English 101 and a college level mathematics;
  • Persons who have a degree (AA/AS, BA/BS or higher) from an accredited higher educational institution.
  • Persons who have taken the SAT Test and have scores of 550 in Writing, 550 Verbal and 550 in Math. Act 21 – English and 21-Math

The College Board's Computerized Placement Test is the test used by the Test Center for placement. KNOWLEDGE OF COMPUTERS IS NOT NECESSARY TO TAKE THIS TEST. The tests are as follows:

The Reading Comprehension Test involves using multiple choice questions to measure your understanding of what you read.

The Sentence Skills Test involves using multiple choice questions to measure your understanding of how sentences are put together and what makes a sentence complete.

The Arithmetic, Elementary Algebra and College-Level Mathematics Tests consist of multiple-choice questions that measure your understanding of mathematics. The College-Level Mathematics test requires the selection of an answer.

Registration Procedures

Students should call the Test Center Liberty Campus (410-462-7666) or Harbor Campus (410-986-5588) after receiving the acceptance letter from the admissions office to schedule an appointment to take the test. ACCUPLACER Tests are given daily by appointment ONLY. No walks ins!

Students are required to bring a photo identification and social security card or other legal documents reflecting the social security number to the Test Center on the day of their appointment.

Testing Hours

Liberty Campus, Harper Hall, Room 211 and Harbor Campus, Bard Building, Room 112.

Monday-Thursday 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 5 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and Saturday at 10 a.m.

Special Arrangements For Students With Disabilities

If you have a disability or a temporarily disabling condition that will prevent you from taking the test under standard conditions, inform the Test Center prior to your scheduled test date.

Test Room Prohibitions Textbooks, notebooks, cell phones, dictionaries, or other paper of any kind are not allowed in the testing room unless specified by the instructor or test administrator. Anyone observed giving or receiving help during the test or using notes or books of any kind will not be permitted to continue the test. No unauthorized test materials or notes may be taken from the room after the test. BCCC may not accept any test score whose validity is in question.

Procedures for Retesting

Students are permitted to take a retest only one time. The retest must be taken no sooner than forty eight hours after the initial placement. Students will not be allowed to take a retest once they are enrolled in the recommended course from the placement test. Students enrolled in the recommended course may follow the appeal process for approval to retest.

The appeal process is as follows:

  • The Departmental Chair for English will make the decision concerning reading and English.
  • The Departmental Chair for math will make the decision concerning math.

Procedures for Requesting ACCUPLACER Scores From Previous Colleges

Students should request an official sealed copy of their ACCUPLACER scores from previous college to be mailed to the Test Center at Baltimore City Community College or fax a copy to (410-225-4606).
