    Program Description 

    Students in the Special Education Assistant Certificate Program prepare for careers working with exceptional children in Baltimore City and area schools, hospitals, and clinics. Students acquire a foundation in human development and become experienced in working with exceptional children in educational settings providing practical fieldwork. Many students in the Early Childhood Education degree program also earn this Special Education certificate in order to expand their job opportunities.

    The Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that “Employment of teacher assistants is projected to grow 9 percent from 2012 to 2022, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Employment growth is expected due to increases in student enrollment in elementary and secondary schools as well as in childcare and preschool.”

Career Options and Occupation Outlook

  • Special Education Teacher Assistants work in public and private schools, childcare centers, hospitals, and for religious organizations. About 4 in 10 worked part time in 2012. Most do not work during the summer. Educational requirements, which vary by school district and position, range from a high school diploma to an associate’s degree.
