BCCC Professor of English Jà Hon Vance helped hundreds of Baltimore area African-American males rediscover their ability to learn and break through past barriers to success. Because he believed in the power of education, and knowing the educational challenges faced by too many in this group, Professor Vance set up the QUEST program at Baltimore City Community College in 2006 as a structured learning community for African American males to earn their Associate of Arts degree in one year. The program – and its community – have been going strong ever since.
Along with Professor Vance’s increasing accomplishments in creating conversations within and about education, he is also the founder and executive director of The QUEST: Journal of Higher Education Excellence
, which seeks to create a national body of knowledge and discourse about issues affecting the education, college completion and graduation rates of African American males.
