Students are expected to learn the following within the Respiratory Care program:
- Patient Data and Evaluation Recommendations
- Review data in patient record.
- Collect and evaluate additional pertinent clinical information.
- Recommend procedures to obtain additional data.
- Equipment Manipulation, Infection Control, and Quality Control
- Manipulate equipment by order or protocol.
- Ensure infection control.
- Perform quality control procedures.
- Initiation and Modification of Therapeutic Procedures
- Maintain records and communicate information.
- Maintain a patient airway including the care of artificial airways.
- Remove broncho-pulmonary secretions.
- Achieve adequate respiratory support.
- Evaluate and monitor patient's objective and subjective responses to respiratory care.
- Independently modify respiratory procedures based on patient's response.
- Determine the appropriateness of the prescribed respiratory plan and recommend modifications when indicated by data.
- Initiate, conduct, or modify respiratory care techniques in an emergency setting.
- Act as an assistant to the physician performing special procedures.
- Initiate and conduct pulmonary rehabilitation and home care.
- Professionalism
- Actively participate in the learning process for the required skills.
- Utilize the facilities' resources to gain new knowledge and skill.
- Actively address any identified deficit.
- Present well groomed, neat physical appearance.
- Arrive with equipment required to provide clinical care.
- Communicate nature of therapy and expected results clearly and effectively to patient and/or family members.
- Maintain patient confidentiality as per HIPA regulations.
- Communicate clearly and effectively with hospital/institutional staff personnel.
