BCCC and YearUp Student

Torre Smith
Thanks to Baltimore City Community College and the YearUp program, I changed my life and have my eyes on reaching my goals.

I was working at a fast food restaurant when I first heard about YearUp; a co-worker mentioned it, and after hearing about the opportunities – the college classes at BCCC and the internships with Fortune 500 companies – I went for it. I had to determine what my priorities were and where I wanted to be in 5, 10 or 15 years. I knew the YearUp program at BCCC would give me what I needed – college courses, life and workplace skills and internship opportunities with Fortune 500 companies known throughout the world. It was my chance to change my life.

There are high expectations, but a high level of support as well. There is a dress code, but along with many other expectations to help us succeed in our personal and professional lives. I feel different and people see it. When I go to class or work in my suit and tie, people in my neighborhood or on the bus notice me and recognize my success. If I can change my life, others can change theirs too.
