Articulation Agreements

Articulation Agreements

What is Articulation?

Articulation is the process of developing a formal, written agreement that identifies courses (or sequences of courses) of a "sending" campus that are comparable to, or acceptable in lieu of, specific course requirements of a "receiving" campus.

For high school students, articulation enables a student to make a smooth and speedy transition from high school to college, avoid duplication of courses or loss of semester credits, and receive credit for high school courses toward a certificate or associate degree.

For a BCCC student, articulation enables a smooth transition from an associate degree program here to a baccalaureate program. This means a BCCC graduate will be accorded full junior standing at one of many articulating colleges and universities. Other options include online programs and international programs.

The Office of Articulations and Partnerships maintains articulation agreements with four-year colleges and universities in Maryland. The Maryland Higher Education Commission has developed specific Statewide Transfer Regulations for community colleges and public four-year colleges and universities. These regulations are designed to assure that students can progress from a community college to a four-year institution without loss of time or unnecessary duplication of effort. The Transfer Regulations apply to all public institutions in
 Maryland.

Articulated courses are not to be construed as "equivalent”; rather, they are “comparable to,” or “acceptable in lieu of” each other. Course content on respective campuses is such that successful completion of a course on one campus assures the necessary background, instruction, and preparation to enable the student to progress to the next level of instruction at another college.

The course outline of record serves as the basis for most articulation although the agreement can sometimes be obtained through faculty-to-faculty dialogue and submission of supplemental materials such as syllabi, student portfolios and other documentation.

What Do Students Need to Know?

Students planning to transfer BCCC credits to another college or university are responsible for taking the courses required for admission to that institution. Students interested in identifying courses and programs that transfer to a particular college or university should contact a Student Success Specialist early in their academic career. Services include advice about relating personal goals to an academic program; selecting courses that are transferable; and registering, applying for financial aid and transferring to a four-year college.

What is the University System of Maryland Articulation System?

The University System of Maryland Articulation System (ARTSYS) facilitates the transfer of students from one institution of higher education to another. The system allows you to input transcript information from any Maryland community college, select a receiving institution and program of study, and receive an evaluation of how your credit could apply to the selected degree program. Although this is not an official evaluation, it can help you choose safe courses to take at another college until you are eligible for an official evaluation.

Access ARTSYS online. Select Transcript Evaluations then type in your course information. That’s all there is to evaluating your Maryland community college coursework!
