BCCC Awarded $11,000 Grant to Address Student Food Insecurity and Designated a Hunger-Free Campus
Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) is proud to announce that it has been awarded a $11,000 grant from the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC) as part of a statewide initiative to address food insecurity among college students across Maryland.
The competitive grant was open to public institutions of higher education and regional higher education centers committed to addressing student hunger, creating sustainable solutions for basic food needs, and raising awareness about available support services. Through this program, BCCC has been officially designated a Hunger-Free Campus by the State of Maryland. The Office of Student Life & Engagement will focus on the following goals to execute the purpose of this grant, in partnership with the Grants Office and the Division of Student Affairs.
Building a Hunger-Free Campus Community
As part of the grant requirements, BCCC has committed to several key actions that strengthen student support and wellness on campus:
- Establishing a dedicated Hunger Task Force
- Designating a staff member to assist students in enrolling in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and informing Federal Work Study students of their eligibility
- Actively participating in National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
- Maintaining a fully stocked campus food pantry
- Conducting an annual student hunger survey to guide ongoing improvements
Funds from the grant will be used to restock and expand the BCCC Food Pantry, host awareness events during National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week and increase engagement around food access resources available to students and community members.
