    Program Description

    Acquisition of Physical Therapy competency is developed through a combination of college-based lectures and skills laboratories, as well as direct involvement with patient care during part-time and full-time clinical internships. Successful completion of all courses in the PTA program, including any necessary remedial coursework, will lead to the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Physical Therapist Assisting.
     

    Baltimore City Community College’s Associate of Applied Science degree in Physical Therapist Assisting is designed to prepare graduates for a career as licensed Physical Therapist Assistants in a variety of health care settings.     Graduates of the Physical Therapist Assistant program are eligible to take the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) to qualify for licensure as a Physical Therapist Assistant. BCCC’s PTA program provides an extraordinary opportunity for students interested in entering the Physical Therapy field, and who have as their goal the furtherance of their education and professional development. By law, the Maryland State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners may deny licensure for a variety of reasons. These include conviction of a felony or crime involving moral turpitude, if the nature of the offense bears directly on the fitness of the person to practice Physical Therapy.

    BCCC’s two-year Physical Therapist Assistant program prepares students to work as Physical Therapist Assistants in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, extended care and sub-acute facilities, out-patient clinics, private practices, schools and pediatric centers.

    The program is designed to prepare graduates to become respected members of the Physical Therapy team, providing direct patient care under the general supervision of a Physical Therapist. The Physical Therapist Assistant program is located on the second floor of the Student Services Wing in the Main Building of the Liberty Campus.

    The Licensure/certification examination pass rates (FY 2013, 2014 and 2015) is 100%.

The program responds to the changing needs of the health care community by providing the academic, technical, and life skills training needed to produce graduates who are qualified to sit for the National Physical Therapy Exam for Physical Therapist Assistants and become successful licensed Physical Therapist Assistants.

    Job Description

    Physical therapist assistants (PTAs) work as part of a team to provide physical therapy services under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist. PTAs implement selected components of patient/client interventions (treatment), obtain data related to the interventions provided, and make modifications in selected interventions either to progress the patient/client as directed by the physical therapist or to ensure patient/client safety and comfort.

    PTAs assist the physical therapist in the treatment of individuals of all ages, from newborns to the very oldest, who have medical problems or other health-related conditions that limit their abilities to move and perform functional activities in their daily lives.

    The physical therapist is responsible for the services provided by the PTA. Physical therapists (PTs) are health care professionals who examine each individual and develop a plan using treatment techniques to promote the ability to move, reduce pain, restore function, and prevent disability. In addition, PTs work with individuals to prevent the loss of mobility before it occurs by developing fitness- and wellness-oriented programs for healthier and more active lifestyles.

    PTAs provide care for people in a variety of settings, including hospitals, private practices, outpatient clinics, home health agencies, schools, sports and fitness facilities, work settings, and nursing homes. PTAs must graduate from a CAPTE-accredited PTA program and licensure or certification is required in most states in which a PTA works.

    Salaries range from $22-27/ hour Full time to $40-$50/hour part-time

    Career Options and Occupation Outlook

    Description

    • The PTA program is a two-year 67-68-credit course of study.

    • Prerequisites comprise 14-15 credits that must be completed before entry.

    • 11 credits of additional required courses can be taken before entry.

    • The remaining 42 credits (PTT) must be taken in sequence over two years.

    • Students must be accepted for entry into the Program and start in the fall.

    • Students graduate with an Associate of Applied Science degree (AAS).

    • Students combine academic study in PTA procedures, anatomy, kinesiology, and medical conditions with clinical education and practice.

    Career Preparation

    • Program graduates are prepared for successful employment in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, extended care facilities, schools, and out-patient clinics.

    • Graduates must take a national exam to qualify for licensure.

    • They work under the supervision of licensed Physical Therapists.

    • They treat patients suffering from physical disabilities due to disease, injury, or post-surgery with the purpose of improving their function, strength, and mobility.

    • They implement the treatment plan using a variety of procedures, modalities, therapeutic exercises, functional training, and patient education.

    Job Outlook

    • There is an increasing public awareness of the importance of rehabilitation and wellness and a demand for services.

    • More positions are opening up in hospitals, Extended Care Facilities, Home Health, Wellness Centers, and Private Practices as the general population needs more health care.

    • The variety of physical therapy settings continues to increase nationwide.

    • Job opportunities in the metropolitan area continue to increase.

    • Full-time, Part-time, week-end and PRN (as needed) positions are available.

    • Full time salaries for new graduates vary, but are currently start at ~ $45-50,000 per year.

    • Hospitals pay a little less than private clinics, but have better benefits.

    • Part-time and PRN hourly rates are ~$30 - 50 per hour

    Selective Admissions Requirements

    • Pre-requisites for the Program (14-15 credits) and all transcripts from other institutions must be completed prior to admission for the fall semester.
    • A video and quiz must be completed.

    • A Purpose Statement (350 words minimum) should be submitted with the program application: 1) Please describe your academic experiences and either your work experience, volunteer experience, or observational experience; 2) Please explain why you wish to gain entry into the PTA program; and 3) How will this program help you contribute to the broader community?

    Skills Needed

    Essential Functions

    Students in the Physical Therapist Assistant Program will be expected to:

    • Demonstrate manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination, fine and gross motor skills, and tactile abilities to perform procedures as directed by the physical therapist, and in accordance with the treatment, measurement, and observational skills expected in the field of physical therapy.

    • Demonstrate visual acuity and auditory ability to assess the condition of a patient and administer safe and effective patient care.

    • Demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills for effective patient management and implementation of selected treatment interventions.

    • Demonstrate the ability to apply universal precautions.

    • Demonstrate the physical agility to respond to patient and family needs, including unexpected changes in the patient's status.

    • Demonstrate the physical ability to assist patients with gait training, bed mobility, and transfers to/from the bed/mat, wheelchair, car, or floor.

    • Demonstrate proper body mechanics for lifting.

    • Lift persons/objects in excess of 100 pounds with assistance, and carry/transport objects weighing 50 pounds or more.

    • Tolerate prolonged standing, stooping, squatting, bending, pushing, and pulling.

    • Demonstrate the ability to read, write, understand, and speak English.

    • Demonstrate the ability to utilize appropriate verbal, non-verbal, and written communication with patients, families, clinicians, students, faculty, and other personnel.

    • Perform physical therapy procedures in a safe, ethical, and legal manner.
