    Program Description 

    This degree prepares students to transfer to an elementary education or generic special education program at a four-year college or university in the state of Maryland. The Associate of Arts in Teaching (A.A.T.) degree has been articulated with all of the transfer programs in elementary education and generic special education in the state of Maryland. Upon completion of the A.A.T. degree, students are eligible to be admitted as an elementary education or generic special education major at their Maryland transfer institution.

    Job Description

    Upon completion of this program, students may apply for State License to work as a Paraprofessional in Local State Educational Agencies.  Paraprofessional/Teacher Assistants perform duties that are instructional in nature or deliver direct services to students or parents. Serve in a position to assist a teacher. Teacher assistants work under a teacher’s supervision to give students additional attention and instruction. Teacher assistants work in public and private schools, childcare centers, and for religious organizations. About 4 in 10 worked part time in 2012. Most do not work during the summer.

     

    Students may also transfer to a four-year institution to complete the required BA course work for teacher certification.   

    Career Options and Occupation Outlook

    According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, “Employment of special education teachers is projected to grow 6 percent from 2012 to 2022, slower than the average for all occupations. Employment growth will be driven by continued demand for special education services. Many job opportunities will stem from the need to replace teachers who leave the occupation.”

     

    The Bureau of Labor Statistics also indicates that “Employment of kindergarten and elementary school teachers is projected to grow 12 percent from 2012 to 2022, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Growth is expected due to projected increases in enrollment as well as declines in student–teacher ratios. However, employment growth will vary by region.”

    Skills Needed

    Ability to work with small children or children with disabilities, including physical and mental.  Creative abilities, critical thinking skills, and ability to deal with parents and care givers in a respectful and encouraging manner.
