After a thorough and thoughtful search process, the Board of Trustees is extremely pleased to announce that Debra L. McCurdy, Ph.D., will be the next president of the College. She brings a stellar leadership reputation, a wealth of experience and a lifelong passion for educating students of all ages. We are absolutely confident that Dr. McCurdy is the right leader for the college’s next phase, and we look forward to her arrival here in spring 2019.
Dr. McCurdy is a celebrated leader who has served as the president of Rhodes State College, Lima, Ohio, since 2006. Placing students first, she is a passionate advocate for student access, success and completion. As a strong proponent of shared governance, she endorses individual and collective exchanges to demonstrate that engagement is the path toward equity, inclusiveness and collaboration at all levels. She applauds the pre-eminence of the faculty as the intellectual trust to guide the curriculum and programs for the future growth and direction of the college. Dr. McCurdy places a high value on excellence, diversity and the allocation of resources for the professional development of faculty, staff and administrators.
In her 11-year tenure at Rhodes State College, numerous milestones were accomplished, ultimately transforming the institution by redefining its academic blueprint from offering quality technical programs to also offer comprehensive transfer programs including associate of arts and science degrees; expanding the college’s reach into the region through distance and on-line programs; seeing the growth of a manufacturing consortium to provide skill enhancement and training to serve 26 companies; and initiating other workforce and economic development opportunities to impact the rising needs of industries and business at the local and state level, with a focus on the health sciences.
Dr. McCurdy also oversaw three cycles of strategic planning, realigning the college’s infrastructure and operations. Along with faculty and staff, she oversaw the reaffirmation of accreditation granted in 2009, which led to expansion of the college. Dr. McCurdy brought a strategic vision for program development and growth and was instrumental in the college receiving nearly $25 million in grants and external funding and fostering fiscal stability. Dr. McCurdy has been part of several national initiatives and given her time to various community organizations and boards. She has been recognized for her leadership through numerous awards.
Through her two most recent appointments in higher education she championed the completion and development of major building construction and renovation projects totaling more than $40 million.
Previously in her career, Dr. McCurdy served for nine years as provost and chief operating officer for the Dunwoody Campus at Georgia Perimeter College and for seven years as assistant and associate provost at Clark Atlanta University in Atlanta, Georgia. Earlier positions included serving as a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and vice president for academic affairs at Paul Quinn College in Texas, and as assistant dean of academic affairs at Brandeis University in Massachusetts.
Dr. McCurdy holds Bachelor of Science, Master of Education, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees from Bowling Green State University, in Ohio. She brings to BCCC a proven track record of success and significant leadership and presidential experience.
We would like to thank everyone who participated and contributed to the public forums to inform the development of the presidential position profile. The Board of Trustees is grateful for this important input from all constituencies which guided us throughout the search process. The Board considered survey responses, letters and comments, which in sum formed the basis for the profile of the leader they sought to recruit. We could not be more pleased with the result.
Finally, we would like to acknowledge James H. Johnson, Jr., Ph.D., whose leadership continues the critical work that will set the stage for our next president and the future success of our remarkable institution. We are fortunate to have Dr. Johnson providing strong stewardship during the transition.
We are very excited to welcome Dr. McCurdy as our new president as we embark on our next chapter with renewed focus, a clear vision, a range of strategic partnerships and a great team of loyal and creative employees.
