Calling All Models :

Fashion Design Department Holds Model Call

The BCCC Fashion Design Department will be holding model call selections for its upcoming spring fashion show. Male and female models are encouraged to attend one of the sessions. The second session of try-outs will be held

tonight, April 4 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Fine Arts Theatre.


Models must be available to participate in the fashion show scheduled for Sunday, May 11. All participating models need to be available between the hours of 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

ITS Reminder: Network Maintenance Scheduled for Tomorrow

Network maintenance is scheduled to take place tomorrow, April 5 between 1 and 5 p.m.


This will affect Internet, local network connectivity, shared drives and email. External access of Outlook Web Access (OWA) will not be available. Local workstation capability will not be affected.



Next Week: Autism Presentation from BCCC Professor
Sociology professor Richard Bucher, along with his wife, will present Lessons Learned from Our Son Jimmy Ė Living with Autism, Wednesday, April 9 from noon to 1:20 p.m. in Room 304 of the Main Building. The two will discuss life with their son Jimmy and what itís like to raise a child with autism.

Dating and Domestic Violence Workshop to Take Place Next Week
Did you know? April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Shawn Harrison. Deputy Chief of Police and Public Safety, and Angela Donn from Student Support and Wellness Services will facilitate Knowing the Warning Signs and Symptoms: Addressing Students Who Are Experiencing Dating and Domestic Violence, a staff development workshop being held Wednesday, April 9 at 2 p.m. in the Gaare Auditorium.

Attendees will learn about the signs and symptoms of domestic violence, as well as ways to help students dealing with it. The workshop will also discuss the institutional compliance with the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act (VAWA). Click here to view more information about VAWA.

Step Increases Now in Effect
Effective as of yesterday, all eligible positions will receive an in-grade single step increase. If you have reached the highest step in your grade, you are NOT eligible for this step increase.

Pay checks dated April 9 will only include one day (today, April 1) at the new rate. The pay check dated April 23 will include the full increase.

Health Holiday Announcement
The Department of Budget and Management has announced its approval for FY14 employee health holidays during the month of April. Bi-weekly employees will receive two health holidays. No health deductions (dental, medical and prescription) will be taken from regular employee paychecks for these health holidays on April 9 and April 23.

Also, because April has three pay period ending dates for regular bi-weekly employees, all health deductions (dental, medical, prescription, term life, AD&D, Flex Spending and Long Term care) will be skipped for the pay period ending date April 29. These will be reflected in paychecks issued May 7.

Regular bi-weekly employees will receive three consecutive paychecks with no or limited health deductions.

The BCCC shuttle bus service will operate under the following schedule through the rest of the semester:


7 a.m.

7:05 a.m.

West Pavilion and UMI Building

7:15 a.m.

Bio Park

7:30 a.m.

Harbor Campus

7:45 a.m.

UMI Building and West Pavilion

8 a.m.

Retirement Planning for Women Workshop

Women and men face different concerns and challenges when it comes to accumulating enough money for retirement.


The upcoming Retirement Planning for Women workshop on Wednesday, April 23 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Gaare Auditorium will discuss the obstacles women face when planning for their retirement, and how to manage them.




Supplemental Retirement Questions?

Meet with Jeannie Henry, the Nationwide retirement specialist, on April 23, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 3:30pm p.m. in the Mini Conference Room to assist those that have questions about retirement.

Appointments are recommended for anyone in need of assistance with the following:

         Enrolling in the MSRP 457b, 401k, 403(b) Roth 457b or Roth 401k plans

         Increasing contributions to get on track for retirement savings

         Consolidating other retirement accounts from prior jobs to the MSRP plans

         Reading the quarterly statements in detail

         Completing the form for rolling over annual leave (vacation time) into the plans (for those who are planning to retire)

         Reviewing investment selections and learning more about asset allocation and diversification

First Steps to Retirement Planning Workshop Coming to BCCC

The Maryland Supplemental Retirement Plans will present First Steps to Retirement Planning, a half-day seminar that will help early to mid-career State employees make sound financial decisions in planning for retirement.


The seminar will be held Wednesday, May 28 from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Mini Conference Center.


Topics will include:

  • Your Pension
  • Understanding Social Security
  • Overview of 401(k)/457/403(b)
  • How to read your MSRP Statement and Using the Interactive Retirement Planning Tool
  • The seminar will also include one-on-one meetings/plan enrollment

FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) Training
There will be two FMLA training sessions held for directors, supervisors and managers. Each training session will teach attendees about the following:

         The history of FMLA

         FMLA notice requirements

         Supervisorís role in FMLA compliance

         Frequently Asked Questions about FMLA

         Overlap of FMLA, ADA and Workersí Compensation laws

         Difference between intermittent FMLA and full FMLA


Each training session will be limited to 35 attendees and will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Mini Conference Center. The training dates are:

Business and Finance News - Fiscal Year End Deadlines

In preparation for the end of the fiscal year, please note and adhere to the following deadlines:

April 25

Report the status of all open purchase orders to Accounts Payable. You must report whether or not POís should remain open or be closed. The default will be to close them at year end if no written notification has been made

May 1

Begin submitting FY15 requisitions to the Procurement Office

May 23

Final request for any requisitions using FY14 funding, providing all backup documentation is included

June 6

Submit travel reimbursements for payment in FY14 to Accounts Payable. If travel is in June, then submit by July 3

June 6

Submit spring tuition reimbursement requests to
Accounts Payable

June 10

CPC holders must submit May 2014 CPC statements with original receipts to the Procurement Office

July 10

CPC holders must submit June 2014 CPC statements with original receipts to the Procurement Office

Life Sciences Building Update: Fourth Floor Now Open

The fourth floor labs of the Life Sciences Building are now open. All students should go to the fourth floor for their scheduled labs. Biology 102 lab students should go to Room 409.
