Statement on Ms. Niehoff’s Separation from BCCC


Effective April 23, 2014, Ms. Susan Niehoff, no longer serves as vice president for business and finance at Baltimore City Community College. This decision was made to confirm the future direction of the business and finance division. Dr. Carolyn Anderson, interim president, will name an acting vice president for business and finance.

New Officers Elected by Faculty Senate

The Faculty Senate recently elected new officers for the 2014 – 2016 term:

·         Dr. Katana Hall - President of the Faculty Senate

·         Professor Theron Coleman - Secretary of the Senate


Each academic department is currently electing new Senate Executive Committee representatives. The new Senate Executive Committee and officers take office May 15, where it will elect the Vice President of the Senate from its ranks.


World War II Veterans on Campus May 9


Come to Gaare Auditorium in the Nursing Building Friday, May 9 at 7 p.m. as the Montford Point Marines, African American World War II veterans who first integrated the Marines, recall their experiences. The group was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in June 2012 by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker John Boehner.


The veterans will be honored by the BCCC Office of Public Safety in a presentation of colors. Thanks to all members of the History Club and Office of Student Life for sponsoring this important and historic event.



ITS Alert: Internet Explorer Issues


BCCC faculty and staff should ­not use Internet Explorer (IE) until instructed to do so or unless absolutely necessary to perform a particular college-related function.  Instead, please use Mozilla Firefox or Chrome.


IT Services implemented a security mitigation toolkit in early April to help protect systems with Windows XP and IE.

Panther Pride Week: Panther Block “Paw”ty

The Office of Student Life, in conjunction with the Student Government Association, presents the 2014 Panther Pride Week! All members of the BCCC community are invited to take part in the activities planned as part of this week.


Today, May 1, will feature the fourth annual R.E.S.P.E.C.T. – Unlocking Matters of the Heart event. This year’s conference, hosted by the Office of Student Life and the Civility, Sensitivity and Diversity Planning Committee, will feature sessions on dating and domestic violence, healthy relationships, gender roles and LGBTQ issues. The event is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Mini Conference Center. Light refreshments will be provided.

Volunteers Needed for Commencement

The 2014 BCCC Commencement ceremony will be held Saturday, June 7. The College needs the following volunteer help:


Student Volunteers:

·     Line up graduating students, provide front door support, assist with graduating student check-in/name card distribution, escort VIPS


Staff Volunteers:

·     Assist with front door support to ensure students are escorted to proper areas, assist with graduating student check-in/name card distribution, escort VIPS


Faculty Volunteers:

·    Assist with platform robing, as well as faculty, staff and graduating student robing

A New Look and Feel for!
Are you ready for a new look? The College’s IAMR division has launched a College website revitalization project to improve site navigation, content consistency and visual look and appeal. The Website Advisory Group, consisting of faculty and staff from across the college met on March 31 to start the upgrade project. The website is being transformed using current web trends, analytical data and best practices in higher education. The new site will support mobile platforms and provide site architecture focused on student, faculty and staff engagement.

We want your input! We want you to be a part of this exciting project by giving us your opinion about the current site. Please take a few minutes to answer survey questions at: we want your opinion.


Students, faculty and staff can expect to see a new and redesigned site by the Fall 2014 semester. The site will feature easier navigation and will be more user-friendly and student-focused.

Campus Window Cleaning to Start Next Month
A reminder for faculty and staff: Beginning Monday, May 12, our window cleaning contractor will begin cleaning all interior and exterior windows on the Liberty Campus, including the West and South Pavilion buildings. The cleaning should take approximately ten days. During this period, please remove any items from interior window locations that may block accessibility.

Join Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Mayor of Baltimore, and Anthony W. Overview of Supplemental Retirement Plans Presentation


Learn how contributing just $10 to $20 per paycheck can get you on the road to supplementing your pension and social security payments during your retirement years. The Overview of Supplemental Retirement Plans workshop, taking place Wednesday, May 7 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Mini Conference Center, will cover everything you need to know, including pre-tax vs. after-tax, how much to save, withdrawal rules and options, the power of compounding and the benefits of dollar cost averaging.

Meet with the Nationwide retirement specialist Wednesday, May 7 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the Mini Conference Room to get your retirement questions answered.


Appointments are recommended for anyone in need of assistance with the following:

·         Enrolling in the MSRP 457b, 401k, 403(b) Roth 457b or Roth 401k plans

·         Increasing contributions to get on track for retirement savings

·         Consolidating other retirement accounts from prior jobs to the MSRP plans

·         Reading the quarterly statements in detail

·         Completing the form for rolling over annual leave (vacation time) into the plans (for those who are planning to retire)

·         Reviewing investment selections and learning more about asset allocation and diversification

Reserve Your Spot: Faculty Affairs Retirement Dinner

The 2014 Faculty Affairs Retirement Dinner will be held Thursday, May 15 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton Baltimore North-Pikesville. Admission is $45 per person.


The event will celebrate the accomplishments of four BCCC faculty members who have dedicated long years of distinguished service to students.


The deadline for reservations is Friday, May 9. Payment must accompany reservations.

Later this Month: BCCC Fashion Show!
The Business and Technology Department’s Fashion Design Program will present its 35th annual fashion show, “/Ka’äs/,” Saturday, May 17 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Physical Education Center. The fashion show will showcase collections created by students in the Fashion Design program.


Tickets are $10 for students and $15 for non-students. They can be purchased by calling the Cashier’s Office at 410-462-8058 or visiting the Cashier’s Office in Room 51C of the Main Building.

State Comptroller to Headline
BCCC Tax Symposium
The BCCC Inaugural Tax Symposium will be held Wednesday, May 7 from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Mini Conference Center. Speakers will include Peter Franchot, Maryland State Comptroller of the Treasury, Carl Stokes, Baltimore City Councilman and Chair of Budget, Taxation and Economic Development and Arun Subhas, partner at Ernst & Young, a global consulting firm. The event is free and open to members of the community.

Knowledge Is Power Learning Forum

QUEST: The Journal of Higher Education Excellence, in conjunction with the Department of English, Humanities, Visual and Performing Arts, will host the Knowledge is Power – Register for Summer/Fall 2014 Classes at Baltimore City Community College event. This learning forum will feature Darrin Henson from the film “Soul Food” and Dr. Sabrina Jackson, an author from Detroit.

FMLA (Family Medical Leave Act) Training
The second FMLA training session for directors, supervisors and managers will be held Thursday, May 22 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. in the Mini Conference Center. This training session will be limited to 35 attendees and will cover the following:


·         The history of FMLA

·         FMLA notice requirements

·         Supervisor’s role in FMLA compliance

·         Frequently Asked Questions about FMLA

·         Overlap of FMLA, ADA and Workers’ Compensation laws

Alert to Students: New Scholarship Opportunity

The Board of Trustees of The John J. Leidy Foundation, Inc. awarded the BCCC Foundation $2,200 to put toward student scholarships. These scholarships will be awarded for Fall 2014 semester students who reside in Maryland, have demonstrated financial need and are in good academic standing.


Students may go to to download an application and apply for all of the BCCC Foundation scholarships.


Scholarship applications must be received by June 15.

Business and Finance Reminder: Budget Deadlines
The preparation of next year’s operating budget is currently underway. The FY15 budget follows a modified zero-base and includes a component for linking all expenditures to the College’s Strategic Plan.


Please note the following budget deadlines:


·         Monday, May 5 – Budgets due back to Budget Office

·         Thursday, May 15 – College budget due to President

·         Tuesday, May 27 - Budget approved by Board of Trustees


Reminders from the E-Learning Department:

Submit Your Course for the Quality Matters (QM) Review:

If you taught an online or hybrid course for more than four semesters, please consider submitting your course for the Quality Matters (QM) review. 


The advantages for having your online or hybrid course QM recognized are:

  • Personal and professional recognition of a high-quality online/hybrid course
  • Middle States commendations for maintaining online offerings of high quality
  • Creating a culture of excellence in the Academic Affairs Division
  • Having your course acknowledged on the QM website


Steps for having your online or hybrid course QM recognized and timeline.

  1. Respond to this email and copy your associate dean and dean, indicating your willingness and commitment to follow through the process
  2. Enroll and complete successfully the two-week course called Applying the Quality Matters Rubric (APPQMR). The course is free for all attendees (a $25 per person technology fee will be paid by the E-Learning Department). The course will be taught by Diana Zilberman and offered from Wednesday, June 4 through Wednesday, June 18.
  3. Prepare your course for the QM review by the end of August
  4. Submit your course for review in September
  5. Have your course QM recognized in December


The E-Learning Department would like to have at least 15 faculty members participate in this process. If you are interested, email Diana Zilberman at

Health Holiday Announcement
The Department of Budget and Management has announced its approval for FY14 employee health holidays during the month of April. Bi-weekly employees will receive two health holidays. No health deductions (dental, medical and prescription) will be taken from regular employee paychecks for these health holidays on April 9 and April 23.


Also, because April has three pay period ending dates for regular bi-weekly employees, all health deductions (dental, medical, prescription, term life, AD&D, Flex Spending and Long Term care) will be skipped for the pay period ending date April 29. These will be reflected in paychecks issued May 7.

Regular bi-weekly employees will receive three consecutive paychecks with no or limited health deductions.

The BCCC shuttle bus service will operate under the following schedule through the rest of the semester:


7 a.m.

7:05 a.m.

West Pavilion and UMI Building

7:15 a.m.

Bio Park

7:30 a.m.

Harbor Campus

7:45 a.m.

UMI Building and West Pavilion

8 a.m.

First Steps to Retirement Planning Workshop Coming to BCCC

The Maryland Supplemental Retirement Plans will present First Steps to Retirement Planning, a half-day seminar that will help early to mid-career State employees make sound financial decisions in planning for retirement.


The seminar will be held Wednesday, May 28 from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Mini Conference Center.


Topics will include:

  • Your Pension
  • Understanding Social Security
  • Overview of 401(k)/457/403(b)
  • How to read your MSRP Statement and Using the Interactive Retirement Planning Tool
  • The seminar will also include one-on-one meetings/plan enrollment

Business and Finance News - Fiscal Year End Deadlines

In preparation for the end of the fiscal year, please note and adhere to the following deadlines:

Begin submitting FY15 requisitions to the Procurement Office

May 23

Final request for any requisitions using FY14 funding, providing all backup documentation is included

June 6

Submit travel reimbursements for payment in FY14 to Accounts Payable. If travel is in June, then submit by July 3

Checks Received

According to the College’s Cash Management Procedures, any checks made out to Baltimore City Community College must be given to General Accounting for processing. Please do not bring any checks to the Cashier’s window. Failure to comply with established procedures may result in an audit finding for the College. Life Sciences Building Update: Fourth Floor Now Open

The fourth floor labs of the Life Sciences Building are now open. All students should go to the fourth floor for their scheduled labs. Biology 102 lab students should go to Room 409.

Tell Your Students: Legendary Academy Info Sessions

Are any of your students looking for a job? Be sure to tell them about the Legendary Academy, a two-day class designed to provide further information about the Horseshoe Casino opening in Baltimore later this year. Six sessions will be held through April. This class will teach attendees more about the Horseshoe Casino brand, hiring requirements and current job opportunities available. Those who attend the Legendary Academy will receive special hiring consideration.
