Ivan J. Bates, State’s Attorney for Baltimore City, Announced as BCCC Commencement Speaker for the Class of 2023

Baltimore City Community College’s class of 2023 is honored to announce Baltimore City State’s Attorney Ivan J. Bates as this year’s commencement speaker scheduled for Saturday, May 13th, at 10a.m. at the Lyric Performing Arts Center.

State’s Attorney Bates has overcome many challenges in his life. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he was assigned to the 32nd Army Air Missile Defense as a mechanic before reaching the rank of private first class. While serving our country, he developed an unyielding tenacity to succeed. Mr. Bates earned his Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from Howard University, and his Juris Doctorate from William and Mary School of Law.

He has a passion for Baltimore and a tenacious commitment to community—both are attributes that fit the mission, values, and vision of BCCC. Tenacity builds character and character builds community.

BCCC’s Class of 2023 have proven themselves as tenacious scholars. They too have overcome many obstacles and challenges. Some are veterans and can identify with State’s Attorney Bates’ decision to serve in the military before pursuing a college education. Others can identify with his determination to be a leader who serves others. “We are delighted to welcome State’s Attorney Ivan J. Bates—a compassionate leader, community advocate, and change agent as this year’s commencement speaker,” said Dr. Debra L. McCurdy, President.
