Dr. McCurdy addresses BCCC community on passing of Congressman Elijah E. Cummings
Dear BCCC Community,
I write to you in response to the unexpected and sad loss of Congressman Elijah E. Cummings. While I am still relatively new to the City of Baltimore, I have long admired his dedicated service as a U.S. Congressman and his unwavering commitment to civil rights and his fight for justice.
Congressman Cummings was never afraid to speak up for what he believed was right. You may recall the Congressman's visit to BCCC in February, when he announced legislation for the FAFSA Fairness Act of 2019 to make the process of applying for financial aid far easier for students. Like us, he believed deeply in the power of education and the opportunities it provides.
No doubt, the loss of Congressman Cummings will be felt across the state of Maryland and well beyond for a very long time. We are at a critical juncture in our nation and his principled leadership and voice for justice will be deeply missed.
I have asked that our flags be flown at half-staff throughout this period of mourning. As we continue working hard together, giving our best each day in service to our students, our stakeholders and the City of Baltimore, we truly honor the Congressman's legacy.
