Lieutenant Governor of Maryland Aruna K. Miller Commencement Speaker

Maryland’s 10th Lieutenant Governor Aruna K. Miller will serve as the commencement speaker at the Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) graduation ceremony on May 10 at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.

This marks BCCC’s 76th graduation ceremony, conferring degrees and certificates to over 200 students.

“For decades, BCCC has stood as more than just an institution of higher learning. It is a lifeline for thousands of students—many of whom are the first in their families to attend college, many who are returning to education later in life, and all of whom carry the hope of a better future. Governor Moore and I are proud of the Class of 2025 not just for the degrees they’ve earned, but for the future they’re building,” Lieutenant Governor Miller says.

Lt. Governor Miller is the second woman to serve as Lieutenant Governor and the first woman of color and immigrant elected to statewide office in Maryland. Taking the position in 2023 with Governor Wes Moore, Miller has devoted her life to public service. She spent 25 years working at the Department of Transportation and represented District 15 in the Maryland House of Delegates from 2010 to 2018. She received a degree in civil engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology.

An advocate for STEM education, Lt. Governor Miller’s remarks will impact all graduates but speak specifically to those receiving a degree in a STEM field.

“As Baltimore City’s only community college, the education our students receive at BCCC prepares them for their next steps in a variety of areas,” Dr. McCurdy explains. “Many of our students transfer to four-year institutions, enter a new field, expand their professional knowledge or enter the workforce. The future of our graduates is wide open and we’re confident in their success.”
