Baltimore City Community College will host 240 some of the city’s top athletes who will be hitting the hardwood in the fifth annual Brunson League summer basketball league starting June 10.

The league has become a popular event for the community and more than 700 spectators are expected to pack BCCC's Physical Education Center on Liberty Heights Ave. each Sunday from the beginning of June until the end of August.

“We are thrilled to host the Brunson Summer League here on the campus of Baltimore City Community College. It gives us a great sense of pride in having a former student-athlete and BCCC alum share such a prominent event with the college and community,” Tara Owens,
Director of Athletics and Head Women's Basketball Coach, said.

League organizer Sean Brunson, a 2012 BCCC alumni, said this is the league's biggest year and that he had more than 30 teams apply for the 20 spots in the city's only officially sanctioned NBA pro-am league.

Brunson said his league is unique for summer basketball leagues as it cost nothing to play, the league keeps both team and player statistics, there’s a weekly player of the week award and an exciting playoff with trophies and bragging rights for the top team.

Brunson said the purpose of the league is to “fill the void of pro-am basketball in Baltimore and use the power of sports to unite our community.”

“These ongoing events will definitely facilitate a positive connection between BCCC and the Baltimore City community,” Owens said.

The league includes athletes who are Baltimore natives, professionals from European leagues, and NBA G League, NCAA players and BCCC alumni. This year’s top players include Aquille Carr, Terry Hosley, Stanton Kidd, C.J. Fair, Roscoe Smith, Gary Neal, Omar Strong, Ricky Harris, Nardie Bogues, Reggie Holmes, Mo Creek, Carlos Smith. Boo Jackson, Sean Farr and Byron Westmoreland.

Games will be held on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. June 10 through July 29 at BCCC’s Physical Education Center. First and second-round playoff games will take place Aug. 3 and 5 and the final found and championship games will take place Aug. 10 and 12. An all-star game slated for Aug. 19 and the grand finale is the Overseas verses NBA Community Give-Back Game Aug 26.
