BCCC Launches Special Speaker Series With “Confessions of a Baltimore Beekeeper” Featuring Nikkia Rowe

Baltimore City Community College launched a new special Speaker series at noon on April 19th in the main building atrium. The events are designed to engage students, staff, and members of the community through opportunities to hear orators in the fields of education, science, technology, business, and community activism.

The kickoff event featured native Baltimorean Nikkia Rowe, the founder and CEO of the John Newman Honeybee Company. Raised in the Cherry Hill community, Ms. Rowe is a lover of all things Baltimore and can be found spending her evenings and weekends chasing swarms throughout the city and attending to her multiple hives. During her lecture, Nikkia shared that her business was launched in 2019, and the idea came from a conversation with a stranger over the price of raw honey in a grocery store.

Attendees of “Confession of a Baltimore Beekeeper” were captivated by an informative and inspirational lecture on the history, economic impact, and environmental necessity of the beekeeping industry. At the conclusion of her lecture, Ms. Rowe gave the audience a taste of the beekeeper’s life by allowing them to observe her bees in her portable observation hive.

“At John Newman Honeybee Company, it is our mission to support the local economy in which we operate,” stated Nikkia Rowe. “We strive to give people of color access to this ancestral art, which serves as a tool for healing generational trauma and battling the forces of systemic racism."
