Welcome to the TRIO/SSS-STAIRS Program!

  • Dear Students:

I am delighted that you are interested in the TRIO/SSS-STAIRS program or are already a participant.  Now what does that mean?  It means that you are a Student Taking Action In Reaching Success because that is what the acronym STAIRS stands for.

Tope Aje The first step you took was enrolling at BCCC to earn a degree/certificate, transfer to a four year college after graduation or get a better paying job. The STAIRS program works because we are committed to your success! However, it only works for students who are willing and ready to take full responsibility for their own success.  I am sure you have heard the Chinese proverb   “Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for a lifetime.”  Our goal is to teach you to fish.

Our tutors will teach you study skills, math skills, and reading/writing skills. Our academic advisors will teach you how to select courses and fulfill your graduation requirements. You will also have the opportunity to visit four year colleges, go on educational/cultural trips, and apply for book award if you qualify for it.

You must begin on this road to success by believing that you can and will succeed. No doubt, we all need help along the way, so do not be embarrassed to ask for it. Meet with your academic advisor frequently and utilize the STAIRS program services including tutoring and peer support groups. There will be times when you will feel like giving up but we know from experience that “persistence prevails when all else fails.”  Refuse to quit.

No matter how long it takes you to get it, when you finally do, you will experience a deep sense of satisfaction that comes from knowing that you can, and that will increase your self-confidence.  We are serious about your success. Come and let us work together so you can learn to fish. For the best is yet to come!

If you have any questions, feel free to call our office at 410-462-8396.
