BCCC Student Awarded NSLS Scholarship

Tyrese McBayneTyrese McBayne is finishing his second semester as a BCCC student, enrolled in the Legal Assistant program, and has made quite an impact during his short time on campus. Most recently, McBayne was awarded one of only 10 scholarships from The National Society of Leadership and Success (NSLS) during the annual Leadership Summit. The NSLS is an organization that provides a life-changing leadership program that helps students achieve personal growth, career success, and empowers them to have a positive impact in their community.

McBayne attended the Leadership Summit in November and posted on Instagram to promote his involvement and the impact of NSLS. His response to the question, "How do you intend to make your community better?" won him the scholarship:

I aim to positively influence my community by establishing an environment where everyone feels appreciated, listened to and motivated to develop. My goal is to inspire others by leading with compassion and insight, backing projects that aid those in need, and uniting people to achieve shared objectives. The NSLS has motivated me to try my best to contribute to my community and lead by example.

An international student, McBayne moved from his native home of Jamaica to attend BCCC as the first educational stop to becoming a lawyer.

“I came from a bad neighborhood in Jamaica where I saw the misuse of power and how important it is to have a strong, ethical justice system,” he says. “I want to help people and becoming a lawyer — then hopefully a judge — will afford me the ability to do so.”

NSLS Induction

He says BCCC is a great opportunity to start his journey to a four-year institution. He is taking advantage of several on-campus opportunities to be involved in the community, in addition to NSLS; he is part of the International Student Club and Oasis.

This is the first time BCCC has hosted a chapter of NSLS, holding the induction ceremony for 52 students in the inaugural cohort last month. These students join over two million members nationwide, with BCCC included as one of the 869 chapters and only the second chapter at a community college in Maryland.

NSLS Induction

“It is great to be in the starting cohort of the chapter,” McBayne says. “It is also wonderful to be one of the first executive members.”

He is the public chair of the BCCC chapter and is looking forward to increasing membership throughout the student body. An honors program, students who achieve a 3.2 GPA receive an invitation to join NSLS, and after induction are connected with scholarship, mentoring, learning and leadership opportunities. NSLS is terrific for all students as they strive to become leaders of tomorrow, McBayne emphasizes.

NSLS is one of many clubs and organizations that serve as a resource and opportunity to all students as they continue their educational journey or move into their professional field. These are all offered through Student Life & Engagement.
