Baltimore City Community College Celebrates 71st Virtual Commencement

(August 20, 2020) - Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) will hold its 71st Commencement via virtual ceremony this Saturday, August 22 at 2 p.m. Nearly 500 members of the BCCC Class of 2020 will receive 544 degrees and certificates. The event will be streamed through the College's website and Facebook platform.

This year's graduating class boasts students who will transfer to Maryland 4-year institutions including Coppin State University, Morgan State University, Towson University, UMBC, and University of Baltimore. The Class of 2020 also has the first two graduates of the Mayor's Scholars Program (MSP), a partnership between Baltimore City Community College, the City of Baltimore and City Schools which makes college tuition free through a last-dollar scholarship. MSP graduates Christopher Davis plans to attend the University of Baltimore and Yitchok Yehuda Vidal will be attending Towson University. The College's dual enrollment program, where students attend both high school and college, will graduate Mabec Ibayan, who will be attending UMBC on a 4-year full tuition academic scholarship.

In preparation for the ceremony, graduates were mailed gift boxes containing their diploma, cap and gown, a commencement program, and an assortment of BCCC branded gifts, including a Class of 2020 face mask.

"Our graduates have worked extremely hard, amidst unusual circumstances and have overcome so many challenges to reach this milestone occasion. While we cannot gather in person due to the pandemic, we will celebrate our graduates, along with their families and friends, to recognize their hard work and perseverance," said Dr. Debra L. McCurdy, BCCC President.

Graduates submitted photographs in regalia prior to the event. During the video streamed ceremony, members of BCCC's Class of 2020 will be recognized with personal portrait slides, listing their name, program of study and any special honors. Along with the formal conferring of degrees, graduates and guests will view congratulatory messages from US Senator Ben Cardin, US Congressman Kweisi Mfume, Governor Larry Hogan, Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson, Speaker Adrienne Jones, Mayor Bernard C. "Jack" Young, Baltimore City Council President Brandon Scott, retired astronaut Robert Curbeam, former Chief Judge Robert Bell, local television news anchors, and a host of national and local prominent figures, as part of the virtual event.
